This article aims to contribute to the debate of the relation between materiality and design as taught at school, through the presentation of two different experiences. At first, we discuss aspects related to the ontological meaning of the materials, emphasizing its importance for the understanding of architectural education and practice. Secondly, we present the experience of one of the authors at De Montfort University, England, a school that encourages designing projects starting with details. In the fourth part, we present the results of the direct observation of Studio design processes at UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco), and a questionnaire survey taken by a significant number of students enrolled in the course – when it was possible to identify a gap regarding the material dimension, justified by the distance between the disciplines of Tectonics and Studio. Through these observations, final considerations are presented, which point to the need of reinforcing the tectonic approach in design teaching.
