The paper discusses the activities, experiences and methodologies of the research and extension group Cartilha da Cidade, from the conceptualization of urban literacy is thought and directed to the general population, opposing to the notion of urban knowledge as a restricted to specialists. Given the reality of the development of architecture and urbanism field of knowledge, thought as a scholarly locus, activities that mutually link research, extension and teaching as citizen training and development of architecture and urbanism social function possibilities are proposed. It seeks to develop accessibility to urban knowledge, as well as to make urban problems derived from territorial interests and powers in the city visible, through workshops that include the dynamics of games that invite participation and the collaborative construction of urban knowledge. The development of an extension methodology stimulates the debate about the role of education in the reproduction of social contradictions and submission to the dominant ideology, postulating precisely the opposite, a possibility of formation in a broad sense, social political, that in fact contributes to the critical action, active and citizen-like. It is a question of making the contradictions, interests and urban relations visible, in order to see possibilities of emancipation for the citizen formation.
