The square acts as an agent of social and commercial interaction since the ancient civilizations and it survives between the different groups that compose the city. It is perceived nowadays as a space for acquaintanceship, rest, contemplation and recreation, as well as being the stage for various social, political and artistic events. In this context, we can highlight the importance of urban afforestation for the improvement of human performance in basic day-to-day activities and for the microclimate of the environment. The present study aims at investigating the relationship between climatic conditions and urban forestation in the Engenheiro Sólon de Lucena Square, in João Pessoa - PB, as well as the performance of human activities and the different forms of space appropriation. Initially, the content of the subject of Thermal Comfort were discussed and a study on the bibliography related to the research was done. Subsequently, an on-site survey was executed using air temperature and humidity measurement equipments, alongside with photographic records and dialogue with passersby. The study points to an understanding about the importance of urban vegetation in public spaces as a mechanism for the improvement of environmental thermal comfort, presenting better conditions for the practice of games, sports and recreation activities in general.
