The objective of this paper is to investigate the use of public open spaces according to the existence of buildings with different levels of visual permeability, frontal setbacks and ground floor uses. In order to meet the objective of the paper, a case study was carried out in the Cidade Baixa Neighborhood, Porto Alegre/RS, according to the criteria: buildings aligned to the lot, buildings with frontal setbacks, residential and nonresidential uses, and high and low visual permeability of the blocks. Data were collected through questionnaires applied to residents of the analyzed blocks and behavioral maps. The results indicated that the diversity of trades and services are more relevant for the use of public open space. However, buildings aligned to the lot also tend to contribute to the use of public open space, as well as buildings with high visual permeability. Thus, the study provides new evidence on the impact of building characteristics on the use of public open space.
