The present article is characterized by an exploratory and qualitative analysis in the municipality of Pinheirinho do Vale, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in order to reflect the urban expansion process, from the perspective of environmental preservation and its relation with the use of the soil, from the Transect tool, which allowed the analysis on the connection between the natural environment and the human environment. The methodology adopted includes bibliographical review on environmental legislation, at the national and municipal levels, and on the expansion and morphology of the city, through Transect and the study of the Smart Code. Based on these assumptions, the partially obtained results show that the growth for the riparian areas derives from the private appropriation of land, appropriate for the occupation, and that, because of their exploitation for speculative purposes, have not yet been urbanized. This factor is related to the discrepancies between the federal and municipal legislations that guide the expansion of the city. The application of the Transect tool proved to be efficient in complementing the city's analyzes and proposing local guidelines, through its zoning methodology that regulates the transitions between the natural environment and the city, and the urban design towards the pedestrian. The aim is to contribute to the knowledge of the theme 'urban expansion and control of the transitions between the natural environment and the city', under the prism of environmental protection and humanistic principles in the current era.
